I absolutely love my urban composter! We live in the country and with 10 acres have lots of room for compost. But what attracted me to the urban composter was the accelerated process which allows me to have compost for the garden in much less time than traditional composters or piles. The added benefit of being able to drain out liquid fertilizer for my house plants is an added bonus. We keep the bin in the garage and add our food scraps weekly. But you could easily store this under the sink. I can’t wait to see if my veggie yield from my garden is better this year!!

Hey Kari. So great to hear your enthusiasm for the Urban Composter! Yes, it’s been amazing for us. You can add your food scraps as often as once a day if you’re so inclined. If you’re adding only once a week, a few things to be mindful of: (1) if you have a lot of food waste (which you likely will after a full week), aim to add the Compost Accelerator at least every 1 1/2″ to 2″ of compacted food waste to ensure the fermentative microbes are evenly distributed throughout; (2) if you’re adding a lot of waste that’s low in sugars/simple carbohydrates (like meat, small bones, juicing pulp), sprinkle in a teaspoon of sugar to help kickstart the fermentation process; and (3) it’s best to not add in food waste that’s rotten. Waiting a full week before you add your food waste risks the scraps rotting, which can upset the fermentation process. Remember not to add high-liquid items (if it’s sloshy, it’s best to dump down your drain or add directly to your garden/soil). And if you have a septic system, you can also opt to pour your bokashi compost tea full-strength down your drain to help give your septic system a boost!
