What’s Your Eco-Style?

Where do you typically get your food?

From the big box stores (Costco, big-name grocery stores) because they’re cheapest or most convenient.

From the farmer’s market, local mom-and-pop grocery/health food store, or my CSA (community-supported agriculture) box. I try to buy organic whenever possible.

In restaurants, or almost anywhere except at home because I’m there so little of the time.

My backyard! I grow and make as much of my own food as possible.

How do you typically get around?

I drive, because there’s no other option for me to get to work and/or drop my children off at school or daycare.

I don’t drive. I either walk, ride my bike, or take public transit.

I travel a lot for work to other cities or countries, so I rely on planes, trains and Uber/taxis to get me from A to B.

I run my vehicle on biodiesel that I make from waste vegetable oil.

How would you choose to furnish your home?

Ooooh, you mean I can buy anything for my place? I’ve had my eye on this one bedroom set from IKEA for SO long…

I’d check out garage sales or Kijiji. Buying used supports the sharing economy, saves me money, and keeps things out of the landfill.

I’m mobile. I don’t spend every night sleeping in the same bed.

I like to make my own stuff. In fact, I’ve been wanting to try my hand at that new carpentry joint I just heard about…

Where would you choose to live?

I don’t know. Possibly somewhere in Europe?

A sustainably designed city with lots of things to do.

I don’t want to be tied down anywhere; I want to see the world!

Off-grid in a remote region close to nature where I’m living off the land.

What would be your ideal restaurant?

One with good selection, prices, wine list and an awesome vibe.

Farm-to-table, using fresh, organic ingredients, a local map showing you where all the ingredients come from, and a write-up of the growers.

There was this one local joint on the side of the road in Belize…

Walking along a street, you come across a discarded aluminum pop can on the ground. What do you do?

Look around for a nearby place to put it (garbage can or recycling bin), and leave it if there isn’t one around.

Put it in my cloth shopping bag that I bring everywhere with me, and drop it off into a recycling bin when I find one.

If I’m in a country where they recycle, I’ll crush it to make it more compact and then toss it into the first recycling bin that I see.

Infinitely recyclable aluminum?? I’ll rush over and pick it up before anyone else does, so I can smelt it at home in my metal foundry.

Where do you get your coffee or tea?

A drive-through on my way in to work.

The local neighborhood coffee shop. I prefer a place that offers almond or other dairy-free milk, and Fair Trade organic coffee. If they roast their own beans on-site, bonus!

The nicest café of wherever I am. But wow do I ever miss that coffee I had in a copper cezve in Istanbul…

I make my own at home.
